These are some initial design ideas for possible front covers that would be done using lino printing. I found it useful to first map out the ideas using pencil as I got a good idea what the final design would look like and could therefore decide how it would look best.

Artist copy from an artist I don't know the name of
I did an artist copy of this persons work that I don't know the name of. I did it as an initial pencil sketch then did it in acrylic paints. I did it in this technique because that's what the artist did and because I wanted to improve my painting techniques by experimenting in this way. I found it helpful.

Draft things preparations
Here I had been watching video's on youtube of gamut masking to help me understand using colour, as it is not something I've used a lot in the past. I looked at gamut masking as this helped narrow down the colours I could use and create colour palettes from those colours. This helped me use colours in a better way instead of just putting any old colour on and getting confused and stressed out like I was before.
Here is a draft of possible back covers, blurbs and where everything should be. Doing this helped me map out how everything would look best.
Learning
Here I was taking what I had learned from the gamut masking video and applying it to my work. I put a colour wheel in photoshop and made a small selection of it to work with and made a colour palette from that section.
Messing with colour
I experimented with colour by finding work that I liked a lot and making colour palletes in photoshop made up of the colours used in the work. This helped me in my use of colour and gave me more ideas of the stuff I can do. I took the colour palette for this work from a piece by Jon McNaught to create a monochromatic effect that he uses in his work. I liked the unified look that the use of different tones of the same colour created.
Colour things again
Here I experimented using the colour palette from a piece of work from this artist that I've forgotten the name of. Creating this colour palette let me experiement with colours that aren't normally used and helped to create the look of a childrens book that I was after. It broaded how I use colour and showed me that the normal colours for everything don't have to be used.
